We may like to be the life of the party, but when our hair is standing up way after we’re down for the count, it’s simply not acceptable.
Hair static happens when there’s a lack of moisture in the air or the hair, and this can be because of dry air (shout out to our BFF, airplanes!), styling tools (our blowout fetish is beginning to kill our hair as swiftly as our wallets), chemical treatments such as color, relaxers, etc (check, check, check), and even not cleaning our hair tools as often as we should. Stuff like not updating our hair brushes as often as we should can lead to us using brushes with old hair trapped inside, and that’s going to create massive static charges.
(Shout out to my new KareCo brush collection, which you can score at Wal-Mart for a steal and has made my hair way happier to be around.)
Static is a sign of dryness, so adding moisture to the hair is the best way to keep those flyaways away. I’m trying to do this with a moisturizing shampoo and leave-in conditioner and never skipping heat protectant — but hair spray on the hair brush before you style your hair really helps as well. Also, you may want to crank up that humidifier – dry air leads to dry hair, sadly.
And that old wives’ tale about the dryer sheet to deal with static…totally true. Rub them on your brushes, combs, your hair, everywhere.
