FEEDing Guatemala, One Bag At A Time

Written by Steph

Get your altruistic on.

If your biological clock is telling you it’s time to purchase the quintessential beach bag, I’ve got great news for you! Last night, I had the opportunity to check out the latest additions to FEED, a line of handbags that combats the preventable deaths of children worldwide.

FEED’s latest bags and pouches were created as a complement to UNICEF‘s ongoing campaign to end malnutrition in impoverished communities. Every day, 24,000 children die worldwide because they lack the basic nutrients we often take for granted. The purchase of a FEED 1 pouch has the potential to give a child the nutrients they need for an entire year; while the FEED 3 bag can nourish– you’ve got it, three children a year.

I know what you’re thinking. I mean, helping a child see another year is a noble cause, but can you justify an insane price tag to do so? The thing is, you won’t have to. A pouch runs at $19.50, and a generously sized handbag is only $39. Forgo a week of Starbucks and you’ve just saved three lives! Simple as that.

The bags and pouches are handmade in Guatemala, and their vibrant patterns are woven by female artisans who, with the help of non-profit Nest, empower themselves by working towards a worthy cause. The bags are made of Ikat fabric and embody traditional Guatemalan culture. Can you say that about Marc Jacobs? Didn’t think so.

FEED 1 and FEED 3 can be found at Lord & Taylor stores, and will soon be available online. If you’ve put off your child-ly duty to purchase a Mother’s Day gift, make haste and prove to your mom that she raised you right. She’ll be proud.
