Our vegan butternut squash mac and cheese recipe tastes uh-may-zing with a little dill pickle hot sauce drizzles on top. And if you’re on a budget, whipping up a giant batch of this to separate into mason jars is one of the best gifts under $30 we can think of.

For about $25 you can make enough homemade hot sauce to fill roughly 12 standard jars!

The Luxury Spot

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dill pickle juice straight from the jar!
  • 1/2 cup chopped dill pickles (we tried this recipe with loads of brands and found this cheap, $3 pickle jar resulted in the best overall flavor)
  • 2 whole jalapeños chopped, preferably red for a fun color accent
  • 1 whole garlic clove
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tbsp white or apple cider vinegar (we prefer apple cider here but use what you have)
  • 1 tsp table sugar
  • 1/2 tsp high-quality sea salt or a coarse-grain kosher salt

Instructions

  • In a blender, combine pickle juice, chopped pickles, jalapeños, garlic, fresh dill, vinegar, sugar and salt. Blend until smooth, though you’ll still see some texture to the hot sauce.
  • Pour the mixture into a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally to let the flavors meld.

Notes

Not sure where to use your new dill pickle hot sauce? We loved it most on:

  • Grilled cheese
  • Pizza (yes, really, and especially white pizza)
  • Hamburgers
  • Flaky, white fish when char-grilled
  • Hot dogs and sausages
