Did you know that collagen-the fibrous protein that keeps skin firm, youthful and wrinkle free-begins to decline starting in your twenties? Well that’s just not right! Luckily, science has shown that eating more of certain foods will protect your skin from premature aging.

Foods to keep your skin looking younger for the rest of your life:

  • Strawberries: Eating vitamin C-rich foods, such as strawberries, may help ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness, suggests research from 2007 in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C has skin-smoothing effects may be due to it’s ability to mop up the free radicals that are produced from ultraviolet rays as well as it’s role in collagen synthesis. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production. Finding Vitamin C rich foods are easy. For a boost of essential Vitamin C try eating more: red bell peppers, papaya, broccoli and oranges.
  • Tomatoes :contain lycopene, which is how they get their red hue. Lycopene is a carotenoid that may in fact help keep your skin smooth like a baby’s bottom. Research suggests that people who have higher concentrations of lycopene had smoother skin, than those people who consume less lycopene. If you don’t like tomatoes, you can always find lycopene in other fresh summer produce like watermelon and carrots.
  • Tofu: Tofu along with other soyfoods, such as edamame and soymilk, may help to preserve skin-firming collagen because they are rich in isoflavones. Researchers believe that  isoflavones help prevent collagen breakdown.
  • Tuna: Tuna and other fish, such as salmon, sardines, and trout contain omega-3 fatty acids which may help keep your skin looking youthful thanks to the omega-3 fat EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) EPA has been shown to preserve collagen, which is need to keep your skin firm.
