This stranded airplane in the woods is actually one creative man’s vacation home.
If you are a fan of the TV show ‘Lost’, and actually managed to watch it all the way through without getting ‘lost’, then this story is probably right up your alley. Retired electrical engineer Bruce Campbell actually lives in this retired Boeing 727 aircraft fuselage for 6 months out of the year. He claims that he didn’t want it to go to waste, and bought it for $100,000 in 1999 with the intention of turning it into a living space. $120,000 later, and he is on his way to doing so, although if you look at the photos he basically looks like a squatter living in an abandoned subway station.

When asked why he decided to live in an airplane, he stated:
“Jetliners are masterful works of aerospace science, and their superlative engineering grace is unmatched by any other structures people can live within…They’re incredibly strong, durable, and long lived. And they easily withstand any earthquake or storm. Their interior is easy to keep immaculately clean because they are sealed pressure canisters.”
I guess that makes sense, especially for germophobes, but if I were going to live in an airplane in the woods, I would want it totally renovated so that it literally looked like a luxury apartment inside. Cambell’s vacation home looks a little more like an episode of hoarders, but I guess I forgot to mention the most interesting part of this story.
This airplane home is located just outside of Portland. Is anyone surprised?
