It was only a year ago that Veronica vied for the love of Kevin Keller; her legs open and gaydar broken for Riverdale’s first openly gay Archie character. Now, Archie Comics is showing Kev some love by giving him his own four-issue series.

It was only a year ago that Veronica vied for the love of Kevin Keller; her legs open and gaydar broken for Riverdale’s first openly gay Archie character. Now, Archie Comics is showing Kev some love by giving him his own four-issue series. Launching in June, the comics will cover Kevin’s friendship with “the gang,” while touching on heavier issues like bullying and Kevin’s experience coming out to his parents.

Co-CEO of Archie Comics Jon Goldwater believes there’s potential for a full title should the mini-series take off. “This is the most important book this company has released in 70 years,” he said, acknowledging that introducing a character like Kevin would’ve been problematic in earlier years. The potential for a full series is definitely there – Kevin’s first appearance in the Veronica #202 was so popular that the issue sold out immediately; requiring the first reprint in Archie history.

As a lifelong Archie lover, it’s refreshing to see that Archie is still alive and relevant. My only question: is Kevin going to date? Or is he going to be like, the sole gay character? Because anyone that had gay friends in high school knows there’s never just one gay person. Kevin will be the gay face of Riverdale, but who will be his P.I.C. (partner in canoodling)? I’m of the opinion that Bullhead is primed to be Kevin’s closeted fuck buddy. Just my two cents.
