Art Spotting: Everybody Gets Screwed

Written by Casey

Fedirco Urbe uses pencils not as his brush, but his creation.

Don’t be thrown by the title. This is a post about art. Fedrico Urbe is a self-proclaimed “Pencilist.” Uribe was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1962 and currently resides and works in Miami. He is a pure conceptual artists playing with different themes and techniques, but with a strong undertone of history and classic art (clearly, as he creates homages to Van Gogh’s paintings in two of his pieces). Also, there’s a clear homage to nature and the beauty in life embodied in his larger-than life, three-dimensional sculptures, a medium which he has chosen to show the depth and history of subjects he’s so inspired by. Using every day objects such as jigsaw pieces, pencils and coins he creates masterpieces the motif that, “Our sum is greater than our parts!” Whether it’s animals, fruits, leather, or human figures,  he never fails in embodying beauty, love, and a great deal of humor that puts all viewers in a pleasant state when they observe his work.

Amidst his colorful creations, Urbe exemplifies a playfulness in his art, in which he doesn’t take his subjects too seriously, yet he is still producing beautiful pieces. He is breaking tradition and progressing while simultaneously staying true to his roots. Some of the subjects in which he embodies are serious yet the colors and materials present a more lively and fun aesthetic. Urbe’s art is unpredictable, and filled with curiosity.
