The Best Way to Reapply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

The best way to reapply sunscreen is easier than you’d think.

Sunscreen is a must all year long, but even more so in summer (and if you’re not already using fragrance-free sunscreen, read this). But, even if you apply your sunscreen every day, doesn’t mean you’re getting the sun protection you need. Not only do you need to apply it, but you need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

Sunscreen is an absolute must in our skincare routine. Nothing works better for anti-aging and erasing sun damage and sunspots than blocking that sun.

Sure, of course you could regularly take off all of your face-makeup, apply your sunscreen and put it all back on again. But, in reality, that isn’t going to happen. If you’re doing a makeup free day, go for it! If you’re doing a light concealer day? It’s still kind of a pain.

Sunscreen stick

If it works for your makeup products you can always reapply sunscreen with a sunscreen stick. Sugar (like the lip balms) makes a sunscreen stick that would work perfectly. You can twist it up or down so it doesn’t get gunky in your bag, and overall is a decent way of reapplying sunscreen.

Mineral powder

But, the truly best way to reapply sunscreen throughout the day? Powdered sunscreen. You’ll have to skip the dewy look for this to work, but hey, avoiding a sun burn is totally worth it.

Tarte (pictured above), makes a tinted powder SPF called Tarteguard, that has SPF 30. Like most of the powdered sunscreen options you’ll see it comes with an attached brush for application.

Supergoop! Also has some options for different tones. This guy goes up to SPF 45 and with it’s lighter range of tones is better for pale folks.

Then there is the classic, Peter Thomas Roth. There is an oily version (SPF 30) and a mineral version (SPF45).

The key with all of these, and all sunscreens really, is applying enough. You’ll never get the full SPF 45 if you don’t apply as directed. And, because most of us rarely put enough of the sunscreen product on, you get less protection. The best way to get around this is to simply apply more often. Apply every hour while you’re out in the sun, who is it going to hurt?

Oh, and as mineral sunscreens tend to do, these can be a monster with camera flash back. Avoid flash photography and you’ll be golden (figuratively if not literally).
