If you haven’t noticed, we like colorful water around here. The Blue Pond of Hokkaido Island, Japan was originally made famous by Apple as part of its OSX Snow Leopard upgrade, but we shouldn’t hold that against it. Located on the River Bieigawa near the town of Biei, the pond, like Angelina Jolie’s new boobs, isn’t naturally formed.
The pristine blue color comes from a high concentration of aluminum hydroxide in the water. Unlike a lot of other really pretty, colorful lakes and ponds the Blue Pond isn’t dangerous, and the color actually changes from blue to green depending on the season. The pond was created when the nearby volcano, Mt Tokachi erupted, and locals decided to build a dam to protect from dangerous mud flows. Say what you will about the Blue Pond, but I want to go swimming in it, stat. I don’t even care that there are zombie tree stumps protruding from it at all angles.
