Okay, those weren’t his exact words. But when music critic Andrea Swensson gave a less-than-glowing review of Green’s performance last night at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Cee Lo ignorantly retorted (on Twitter, because, where else?) “…Im guessing ur gay? And my masculinity offended u?well f—k U!”
What’s it going to take for celebrities to dial it back for a second before exposing themselves as bigoted morons on the internet? I know that Cee Lo is probably new to “the Twitter” and all, but bro – this is what’s happening when you tweet something like that: you’re not only broadcasting your ignorance to your fans in real time, you’re marginalizing them.
You know, if Cee Lo truly believes that a. gay men cannot be masculine b. gay men are threatened by his masculinity (LOfuckingL) and c. that Andrea Swensson is a man, whatever. Be ignorant, Cee Lo. But don’t fucking turn around a few hours from now and tell the world that you didn’t understand the weight of what you said. I’m sick of celebrities embarrassing themselves, and THEN realizing it’s wrong once they catch flack from their fans and publicists. How about you try thinking before tweeting, for fucking once? ONE WEEK AGO, Tracy Morgan apologized for making anti-gay jokes at a comedy show. Yet Cee Lo is bound to come out his face begging for forgiveness, “I apologize for my insensitive comments and am truly sorry, homosexual community. I had no idea my words would hurt so many people.” Am I going to have to scroll through a Tumblr dashboard full of “Cee Lo Green Loves Gay People!” articles come Monday because he somehow managed to miss last week’s Tracy Morgan dramz and had “no idea” he was being offensive? Just spare me, already.
Fuck you AND forget you, Cee Lo.
