This morning in my Journalism class, my very English professor gasped as she had heard the unfortunate news that Margaret Thatcher died this morning from a stroke at age 87. Why is this important? For those of you who do not know, she was the first female Prime Minister of England and a hard-working conservative politician who served from 1970-1990.
Her spokesman Lord Bell made the announcement: “It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later.”
Buckingham Palace released the following statement: “The Queen was sad to hear the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher,” it read. “Her Majesty will be sending a private message of sympathy to the family.”
“Power is like being a lady… if you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.”
Margaret Thatcher October 13, 1925-April 8,2013
