China: Where It’s OK to Trade Infants for Electronics

In today’s consumerist world, it’s hard to pass up shiny new things like the coolest new cell phone or Blackberry.  And if you think about it, babies are a replenishable resource, which is exactly what this couple in China must have been thinking.  After meeting online, the couple had a baby, and sold it to a man named Li Yong for 2,500 yuan (which is about $366).

The couple used the money to buy a new cell phone, but soon changed their mind when they realized that the joys of mobile internet access pale in comparison to the joys of a child’s first words, smiles, and achievements.  Zhang Yao, the mother, told police that she’s been crying ever since she sold her baby.

The police only got involved when Li Yong, the baby’s buyer, made neighbors suspicious when he put the baby back on the market for 10,000 yuan (over $1400).

Luckily the baby is reported to be OK, despite having a crappy mother (who is 19), and really crappy father (21).

  • WTF is wrong with people? Someone should invent a chastity belt to mimic those electric dog collars so if anyone tries to penetrate the “fence”, the girl gets zapped! BTW, that baby is HUGE!

  • I find it so weird to know that there are people like this alive in the world. How could they do this? I never even had such thought before. Setting negative examples for others.God bless the child.
