Culture Spotting: Gay Friendly Emoticons on iPhone iOS6

Written by emilyc

I just updated my iPhone to iOS6, and my Emoji app finally has a way for me to text an emoticon representation of my best friends and an emoticon depiction of the entire neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen and/or Chelsea! Hooray Apple, you’ve adhered to your forward-thinking brand image by creating gay couple emoticons! I also praise you for creating more options in the fashion emoticon department, as well as adding a chocolate chip cookie emoticon, a pizza emoticon, finally giving kittens emotions, and more options for texting representations of exotic fruits. I’m just thoroughly confused as to why you’ve yet to add an African American to the faces category.

Emily is a New Yorker trapped in a Floridian's body and loves every minute of her big city life. With a major in international business and years of being surrounded by ill-fitting suits and all the wrong shoes, she learned that the importance of fashion needs to be communicated to the world. To her, fashion is on the same level as charity work and feeding hungry children. Emily can be found frolicking the streets of her gayborhood enjoying the off-color humor of the gays.
