The closest mammal cousins of anteaters are actually sloths (and then a bit further away would be armadillos). And if you think about the ecological and geographical distributions of sloths, it makes a lot of sense that anteaters and sloths have loads of overlapping habitat. And yes, some of the Caribbean Islands have anteater babies too!
