One of the most important components to any room is lighting. Your lighting should make a statement about you, and that statement should not be: “The owner of this apartment shops for furniture at Lot Less”. Recently, a friend was decorating his living room. He put some bright red couches with some warm gray walls and a concrete slab coffee table. Then, he wanted to hang some concrete pendant lights over the sofa. Me, and his outrageously gay boyfriend vetoed that idea because any time you have a large enough space to make a statement, that is exactly what you should do (unless you are a racist person at a meeting of the NAACP or similar circumstances).
When it comes to statement lighting, just remember to go with what you like; the rest of the room will fall in line around the lighting. Do not be afraid to put a classic chandelier in a modern room or a contemporary piece in a traditional room. Do not be afraid to have sex with your statement lighting on (ladies, that tip is mostly for you). Always wipe from front to back, and embrace large, unique pieces because decor that has a story behind it is most likely to make the boldest statement.
