DIY Inspiration: Sander Reijgers

While Dutch designer Sander Reijgers doesn’t sell his wares in America, his reworked track jackets do make us reconsider what to dump when spring cleaning rolls around.

While Dutch designer Sander Reijgers doesn’t sell his wares in America, his reworked track jackets do make us reconsider what to dump when spring cleaning rolls around.

Mama anders, Reijgers’ first fashion endeavor, is a mash-up of pre-existing track jackets and blow-up doll body parts. “These dolls are so ugly and vulgar that turning them into something beautiful has become a challenge for me,” Reijgers has said of the project. He makes use of all of the doll’s orifices – no anus, nipple, or vagina is safe.

Reijgers unites culture and consumerism in his second track jacket series by combining Nike windbreakers with keffiyeh scarves. The Cultural Contrasts of Symbolism project plays on religion, politics, and capitalism. The final touch is a sexual component (which the artist is clearly a fan of) – Reijgers uses gay models as the vehicle that delivers his ideas on ambiguous social constructs.
