An Abandoned Fairy Tale Castle

Preservationists are fighting to save an abandoned French fairy tale castle.

I am all about castles. Something about the grandeur of living in a huge stone fortress just speaks to my inner child, and outer materialistic and majestic adult self. Every now and then on Pinterest you read about entire castles for sale for ridiculously cheap prices, but the truth is that a lot of the castles in Europe and the US have fallen into disrepair and ruin. Need an example of such?

Built in the 13th century, the Chateau de la Mothe-Chandeniers is one such castle that preservationists are in an uproar to save, because mother nature is making the structure her bitch.

Originally home to the Barclay family, the castle has an interesting history including being overtaken by the English twice in the Middle Ages, getting sacked during the French Revolution, and suffering a fire in 1932.

In 1981, a teacher named Marc Demeyer bought the castle, planning to restore it, but was cock-blocked by a French bank who bought the castle’s surrounding property, giving it two official owners.

So basically this fantasy castle is stuck in limbo, slowly falling prey to nature. We can still admire the photos though, and fantasize about one day being rich enough to buy our own fairy tale castles, fulfilling the dreams of young princesses (like me, even though I pee standing up) everywhere.
