Five Famous Landmarks in Rhodes, Greece

When you think of Grecian vacations, you always see photos on Pinterest of the white washed buildings of Santorini. I know you probably imagine sipping cocktails along the Mediterranean sea in the most expensive, yet tasteful sarong your American dollars could buy, but as Greece is one of the oldest civilizations in existence, it has a lot more to offer culturally, then lazy days at the beach.

Rhodes has been famous since the days of antiquity as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World (second only to my ability to drink vodka straight without gagging). Rhodes is also host to the Citadel of Rhodes; on one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. If history and culture interests you at all, here are five famous places in Rhodes that you must check off your list:

The Colossus of Rhodes– A huge statue of the Greek Titan Helios.

Grand Masters Palace– A medieval castle on the island built by the Knights of Rhodes.

Acropolis of Rhodes– An acropolis dating back to the Hellenistic period.

Mosque to Suleiman the Magnificent– A pink mosque built in 1522.

The Byzantine Harbor– A harbor that was recently excavated to reveal ancient shipwrecks.

If you are going to visit Greece, you should definitely take advantage of the rich history and culture available to you since the days of yore (yore, meaning way, way back in the day). Rhodes is the perfect vacation destination for discovering the secrets of antiquity.
