How To Make a DIY Butterfly Feeder

Spring is on its way, even if it isn’t here now. For those of you who don’t live in a concrete jungle (ironically named since there are barely any trees) you might start to see the beautiful flitter of butterfly wings in your backyard. There are few things in nature (besides my sculpted butt-cheeks) that are as fragile and beautiful as a butterfly, so here are some instructions on how to make a butterfly feeder, to add more beauty and value to your outdoor decor.

Butterflies may look pretty, but they eat some nasty stuff. Rotten fruits and vegetables attract them the most. You can make butterfly food by mixing 4 parts water with 1 part granulated sugar. Boil it until the sugar dissolves and let it cool. You can store any extra food you have in the freezer for a week.

The easiest butterfly food concoction is to blend over-ripe fruit with a squirt of honey, then mix and divide the solution into different containers to store in your freezer.

As for the actual feeder, you can use almost anything that has a sloping rim. Ceramic glasses or pie plates work well. You can decorate it with colorful flowers or twine to attract the insects visually, or buy blown glass flower feeders from the local Wal-Mart if you are lazy and uncreative.

However you decide to do it, attracting butterflies is a great way to get festive for the impending nice weather, and add a splash of color to your back yard.
