If you’re living in this century, you’ve heard the expression ‘on fleek’ at least a thousand times by now. Here’s what it means and how to use it properly.

‘On fleek’ is urban 2014/2015 slang for ‘on point’ or similar expressions. You can’t just use it anywhere though since it has relatively specific implications. For example, fashion and culture references are generally accepted, but if you start referring to household items as on fleek you’re totally missing the point. Here are some good examples of items that would acceptably be considered ‘on fleek’ if they were significantly above par:

  1. “Your hat is so good- totally on fleek.”
  2. “Eating blintzes on Christmas is on fleek 2.0.”
  3. “Hey girl, you know what’s on fleek right now? YOU.”
  4. Anything at all referring to music. Pepper it in all casual like.
  5. Makeup.”Your nude lipstick is so on fleek it’s slaying me.” Throw ‘slaying’ in there as a way to up the millennial ante.
  6. “I heard Brooklyn is on fleek tonight. Let’s go there after we finish this bottle of bourbon.”

Here are a few completely incorrect uses of the phrase, unless you’re being ironic, in which case… whatever:

  1. “These earnings spreadsheets are on fleek.” No they’re not. Go away.
  2. “The American economy is on fleek.” No it’s not. Go away.
  3. “Your bandage dress is totally on fleek.” No bandage dress has ever been. Cannot compute.
  4. Pinot Grigio.
  5. Red nail polish. This is a good example because red nails, while totally classic, are just too classic to require a fad phrase.
  6. “You’re fleeking gorgeous.” This is an obscene misuse. Don’t do this. It’s not a pun word.
