On a block where sandwich boards are plentiful, Sophie Roan‘s have always been eye-catching (my personal favorite sandwich board quote was “The First Draft Of Anything Is Shit– Ernest Hemingway”). But nowadays, the message reads something a bit more indicative of the times; a message that passersby can’t ignore.
Sophie Roan opened five years ago, offering a unique blend of limited edition and detail oriented pieces spun by independent designers. This was no fledgling business; but more like a fashionista’s wet dream, which appropriately found its home in one of NYC’s more eclectic neighborhoods.Â
This boutique and others like it have fought tooth-and-nail to stay open for the pleasure of the masses (or those of us who aren’t particularly fond of spending a Saturday fighting over the last Size 4 DKNY dress at Century 21).  Liz Grenier, owner of Sophie Roan, hadn’t anticipated the downward slope in spending when she re-signed a five year lease last year. “Then the market crashed, people stopped shopping, and it got hard to pay the rent.â€
The East Village boutique will close its doors for good this Saturday. Most pieces are marked down to as much as 75%, much to the joy of shoppers and to the dismay of those who have regarded Sophie Roan as one of the best places to shop on E. 7th street.
Sophie Roan also boasts an incredible collection of jewelry, also on sale:
Shop before Saturday to say goodbye and enjoy steep discounts on Secrets of Charm, Dear Pruitt, and Park Vogel; just to name a few. For those of you who can’t make it by Saturday, you’ll soon be able to purchase the goods online at SophieRoan.com.
We’ll miss you!
*Sophie Roan is located at 117 E. 7th St. Between 1st Avenue and Avenue A.
