Pretty, Pretty Princess

Written by Maura

Who cares if I’m not a kid anymore..I love Disney, and I’m not ashamed. I’ve seen Cars about 5 times, and anyone who can’t appreciate it obviously had a childhood devoid of laughter and imagination. Anyway, there is news in the Disney world and I, for one, am pretty darn excited about it. Mention the Disney princesses to any 5 year old and they just about shit their pants. They can tell you who their favorite is and probably have every possible Princesses product created by the geniuses over at the Disney corporation. The latest..there is a new Princess. Hells yes, Princess Tiana. She is the first African American princess character created by Disney in its 70 year history of princesses. This is sounding vaguely familiar to when Bryce almost lost it over the new Jewish American Girl doll. Every little girl wants their favorite doll or character to look like them-Bryce got Rebecca Rubin, and now every little black girl has Tiana. Go Disney, it’s about freakin’ time. Tiana’s story is the Frog Prince type deal, which I’m kind of surprised Disney hasn’t done yet. Her love is Prince Naveen, a hunky looking animated member of royalty of what racial background–I’m not so sure, he is sort of hispanic looking but with a French accent, whatever he is he’s hot for an animated person–like an exotic Prince Charming.

Some groups are claiming that the whole idea of a princess is not something they want children to idolize, oh please! I think princesses are an awesome influence on girls, it teaches them that they should be respected by the men in their lives, something that turning on the tv to any more adult channels definitely would not. Obviously, no little girls are going to grow up to be a princess, but those characters are generally strong women who tell a positive story of love conquering all. So beat it nay-sayers..I’m excited to see little miss Princess Tiana hit the shelves!
