4 Reasons Men Need to Back Off Our Skincare

Written by Bryce

Men’s skin has different needs than women’s, so it’s no surprise that guys need to get their own shelf in the medicine cabinet.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 78% of men experience irritation from shaving. That’s a ridiculously high statistic, and all that means to me is that men simply aren’t taking care of their skin the way they need to. Aside from shaving concerns, men just have a different skin texture and pH than women. Here are four really good reasons they need to back away from the girly products in our cabinets and get their own:

1. Men’s skin is naturally thicker and oilier. That means their skin can stand up to more intense moisturizers– no need for the dainty, femme stuff.

2. 56% of guys say they have sensitive skin, and almost 59% suffer from razor burns, bumps or cuts.

3. Almost 40% of guys say they have dry skin. But many of them aren’t using a men’s facial moisturizer to protect against dryness – not to mention sun damage.

4. 9 out of 10 men 18+ men use at least one grooming product. But only one out four use facial skincare products. This is particularly troubling!

When I first met my husband he had little two skincare products in his routine: a bar of nearly moldy soap in his shower, and some bizarre cream he bought on the ski slopes of Aspen that had no name or ingredients list. Literally, I kid you not. It wasn’t ever officially stated, but, I made it clear that if we were ever going to live together he’d need to take care of himself properly. Proper care involved nicely folded sweaters, a good cleanser for face (and yes, a different one for body), and daily skin moisture action. Frankly, in the few years we’ve been together and married, he’s never looked better (conversely, he forced me to eat more interesting foods and stop caring what people think, so, we both won).

Some of my faves for him come from the Neutrogena Men’s line. Aside from being totally effective, the formulations appeal to men– and getting them to use the products is like 99% of the battle, right? My husband is particularly into the Neutrogena Men® Triple Protect Face Lotion with sunscreen SPF 20 because he knows I won’t nag him about using sunscreen, and it goes on so light he forgets its even there after a few minutes. He won’t admit it, but his shaving irritation has been reduced significantly since he started using a moisturizer regularly.

In cool news, NEUTROGENA Men has partnered with the greatest player in U.S. soccer history, Landon Donovan, to help guys step up their game in three key areas: cleansing, shaving and protection. A study showed men spend time on skincare, but most are not using MEN’S skincare products. That’s as ridiculous as Americans not fully embracing soccer. Let’s crusade to covert American men into footballers and skincare-embracers.
