The Frozen Art Shanties of Minnesota

Apparently Minnesota got tired of being being jealous of the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, and decided to put together it’s own frozen version, called the Art Shanty Projects. The festival started in 2004, when local artist Peter Haakon Thompson put together an ice-fishing shack to display his art, including film screenings, ice skating, and sleepovers. It started as one shanty, but many more came, and within two years the program received funding and has turned into a full-fledged thing.

Since the event happens on a lake, the artists can get as crazy as they want (no building codes, holla. I just said holla.). The shanties have included everything from an overturned rowboat to an elevator complete with shitty music, a shop that sells items frozen in ice, and a pedal bear, which apparently is a polar bear cycle that you can ride for transportation between the installations.

So next year if you are looking for an alternative to smoking weed in the desert, you might consider doing meth in Minnesota, and joining this awesome project with a shanty of your own.
