The Princess and the Sleep Scan?

Written by Shannon

The amount of sleep or lack of sleep can now be analyzed at home with the new Sleep Scan.

Remember the children’s story the Princess in the Pea? The story in which a young woman drenched with rain seeks shelter in a prince’s castle. The prince’s mom doesn’t believe the claim the woman is making that she is a princess, so she decides to test her by placing a pea in her bed covered by 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds.

Well, this new sensor-equipped mat might be the pea under your mattress. Leading health monitor manufacturer Tanita announced the release of their sensor-equipped mat that’s supposed to measure the deepness and quality of sleep you are getting. The mat is placed under you mattress and will keep track of your body motion, breath rate and pulse throughout the night, if you can get comfortable with this mat underneath your mattress.

The data is stored on an SD or SDHC card and can be analyzed through a piece of software Tanita is bundling with the sensor-equipped mat. Now you will be able to evaluate the quality of your sleep through graphs and a “sleep score” the software gives you based on the information from the capacitor microphone located inside that mat and tracks vibrations.

The SD card is large enough to store the data of 500 sleep cycles. The mat is sized at 863x314x26mm and weighs 1.3kg.

Unfortunately, the product is not available in the U.S. yet. Tanita plans to sell the Sleep Scan in Japan starting in May ($395).
