I’ve never been to Tuscany, but I can guarantee that if I ever venture to that part of Itally, the Castello di Sammezzano will be on my list of places to see. It was originally a super extravagant residence built in the Moorish style for someone named Ximenes D’Aragona in 1605. It underwent redesigns in 1853 and 1889 and turned into a luxury hotel until it was finally closed in the 1990’s. Then, in 2012 a committee was formed to promote it, rebuild it, and share it with the world.
The Castle harkens back to a time when people really put a lot of effort into the tiny details and colors of the architecture (mostly because they didn’t have iPads and internet sex to distract them). It remains a gorgeous piece of Italy’s history and definitely worth a stop and look, if you ever find yourself under the Tuscan sun.
