When I was 19 years old, I dropped out of college and went for a ride with my friend. We ended up living in Mississippi, New Orleans, Maryland, DC, and Georgia for short periods of time, making crazy amazing memories the entire time.
I remember being in my first semester of college and thinking: “Am I stuck doing this for the next four years? When I am done will I even want to fuck my way across America?” I realized that I wanted to get some crazy experiences out of my system while I was young. I thought about how I hadn’t really been anywhere, and if I didn’t go exploring at that exact moment, I probably never would. I also wanted to make some more stupid mistakes before I was forced to grow up.
That 6 month trip changed my entire life. Rather than take the safe road on which I was traveling, I detoured. I jumped in a car with a friend and just went wherever the wind took me.
I am not saying it was easy. I sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door for one day, and ended up working at an Old Navy restocking women’s plain cotton 4 dollar bed bug tank tops. The lessons I learned from being on my own were made of gold though.
So if you find yourself feeling young, lost, and totally unattached now is the perfect time to change it up and see the world. There are plenty of travel sites that explain how you can do it for dollars a day.
After all, you normally regret the things you don’t do, and reminisce about the things you do.
