Vintage Spotting: George Washington’s Hand-Me-Downs

Written by emilyc

Could this be the most expensive book ever? Just this past Friday, George Washinton’s copy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights was sold at an auction at Christie’s. The lucky recipient enjoyed the gold-embossed, signed book dating back to 1789 for a mere $9.8 million – the victorious bidder was the group who maintains Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, which makes the purchase a little more warranted. Talk about vintage shopping.

According to Christie’s, the book is in near-perfect condition and contains handwritten notes in the margins by the first president himself –  and all this time I thought it was a big deal that I bought the book White Girl Problems! In hard copy, not even the iPad version! Leave it to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union to go and upstage me.

Emily is a New Yorker trapped in a Floridian's body and loves every minute of her big city life. With a major in international business and years of being surrounded by ill-fitting suits and all the wrong shoes, she learned that the importance of fashion needs to be communicated to the world. To her, fashion is on the same level as charity work and feeding hungry children. Emily can be found frolicking the streets of her gayborhood enjoying the off-color humor of the gays.
