Bodega cats are taking over Instagram.
Every time I visit anywhere that isn’t NYC, I forget that nobody in the world knows what the hell a proper bodega is. In my Florida hometown they are called junior stores (what does that even mean, anyway?) but I have heard them referred to as convenience stores, corner stops, and places to have sex in the bathroom on long road trips as long as you have no sense of smell. Bodegas are a staple of New York, and as anyone who has ever visited one knows, they more often than not, also feature a bodega cat.
Bodega cats are nature’s way of keeping mice and other pets out of your neighborhood bodega. To most of the country, keeping a cat in a store where you buy food might seem counter-intuitive, but the other option is to have rats, mice, roaches, and bugs crawling all over things you may one day want to buy. Bodega cats are the lesser of two evils.

Somebody finally decided to give bodega cats the recognition they deserve, because Bodega Cats of Instagram has officially arrived, and they have over 25,000 followers.
This may be an ‘only in NYC’ type of deal, but I still think its important for the world to recognize what these cats contribute to our little overpopulated archipelago.
