DIY Diamond Cleaning Tips

Written by Bryce

Spring cleaning your diamond collection? Now that’s chic.

DIY Diamond Cleaning:

1.       KEEP IT FRESH: Not only does baking soda make for tasty cookies and a fresh-smelling fridge, this versatile substance can also keep your ring clean. In fact, baking soda’s mild, non-abrasive consistency makes it a great choice for cleaning all metals and precious stones.

Directions – Simply pour a bit of baking soda into a bowl and mix it with a bit of warm water to create a soft paste. Take off your ring and use your fingers to gently rub the paste around the stone, the setting and the ring. Rinse the ring in warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Sparkle on, lover!

2.       THOSE PEARLY WHITES: Another common household item, toothpaste, also cleans engagement rings in a pinch. Take a bit of toothpaste — the non-gel, chalky kind is best — and apply it to a soft-bristled toothbrush. You might even want to invest in a child-size brush; they have smaller heads and softer bristles that are perfect for ring cleaning.

Directions – Gently scrub the ring all over the brush. Rinse with warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Your ring will shine like new!

3.       BLING ENHANCING BUBBLES: For an even deeper clean, simply squirt a bit of liquid dishwashing detergent on a toothbrush. Again, the small size and soft bristles of a child-size brush come in handy for ring cleaning. Add a tiny bit of warm water and scrub your stone and setting gently.

Directions – Rinse the bubbles away with warm water. Dry with a lint-free cloth and admire the shine! If your ring is especially grimy, let it sit in a solution of warm water and dish soap for half an hour before scrubbing.

4.       EXTRA SHINE: Want to up the shine factor even further? Clean your ring using one of the above methods, then let the ring soak in a mixture of one part ammonia to three parts water for half an hour. Take the ring out and let it air dry to a bright sparkle.

Directions – With regular cleaning sessions, your ring will remain as shiny as the day he bought it. If for some reason your ring gets really dirty, you can always take it to a jeweler and ask for a professional cleaning. Most charge just a few dollars.
