Buffy’s Back

Written by Maura

There are certain fads in entertainment that I tend to be hesitant to accept and fully appreciate. The most recent of said fads would be the sudden popularity of vampires. I never was a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel(although I know there was a pretty strong fan base which includes my sister-in-law, Alaina, who is moderately obsessed).  Even now vampires and sci-fi are not high on my dvr wishlist. I still refuse to read a Twilight book, despite the urging of pretty much every female friend and family member I have. Thanks to the encouragement of my sister and the fact that I got the whole first season on dvd for free, I recently got caught up on True Blood which just started its second season a few weeks ago.  As much as I hate to admit it, I really like it.

Now, first thing is first..this is not something to watch if you are bashful when it comes to a legit sex scene. It’s pretty effing raunchy..but as long as you are warned ahead of time and are not in mixed company, its not so bad. The plot is not the usual “vampires are invading our town and killing people so we need a hero to stab them in the heart and shove garlic down their throat” vampire show. In True Blood vampires are a minority class of citizen, some of who are seeking to be mainstream and some of who prefer to believe the whole world is against them and they must fight authority and those that are “normal”. And of course there is the normal additions of most television series, forbidden romance, murder, drama, sex, drugs, friendship etc. While Buffy may not be back at least vampire fans can get their dose of bloodsucking entertainment. All in all if you are going to take the plunge and begin to accept the vampire genre, I recommend you begin with True Blood, I am now officially a fan and once you start hanging out with Sookie, Bill and Jason you will be too. Added TB trivia..Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin) and Bill Compton(played by Stephen Moyer) are dating in real life too! Fancy that!

True Blood is on HBO Sundays at 9PM

  • If you enjoy True Blood I suggest reading The Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire books, the series True Blood is loosely based on them.

(I will show you my Spike dolls the next time you come over. You won’t say I am moderately obsessed after that.)

  • YEA!!! Those books are so good, I got into them in Bermuda! The show is good, the books are great!
