To all you sluts with the iPhone 3GS, mazel tov. Your phone is probably cooler than my Blackberry 8900. If you don’t have the iPhone 3GS, it’s likely because you don’t want to switch your current or perhaps better carried (Verizon?) to ATT. But what if you unlocked this hot little phone so it could be your own personal cell whore? You’d probably fall in love with that little phone, bring it to your service, and never look back.
Unlocking this iPhone has been a mega-biatch, with nerds across the globe shuffling to get it done first. Nerds in NYC, Lush Angeles, Seattle, and even far reaching places like Mumbai (which isn’t that far reaching if you’re talking nerds and tech) have all been hacking away at this phone since the release.
Steve Jobs, beware, my boyfriend is coming after your programming: past, present, and future.
For the last iPhone, it took roughly a week for hackers to overcome Mr. Job’s programming. This time wasn’t much different. This past February, Apple filed a lengthy statement to the U.S. Copyright office in an effort to stop hackers from modifying phones legally. Although a ruling hasn’t yet been made, digital-rights advocates have been going buckwild in an effort to combat Apple’s statement. I have to say, I tend to agree with the advocates: keep my friends legit, and out of jail. A ruling will likely be made this fall, so get all your hacking in ASAP just in case!
The unlock process seems simple enough even for my infant son to do; however, please be warned that if you have upgraded your shiny new iPhone 3GS to version 3.1 you cannot unlock it. There are two simple stages, jailbreaking and unlocking. To jailbreak the phone you need to use purplera1n. When you have installed this, it works on either Windows or Mac OS/X you simply follow the instructions to install Cydia- your new phone is Jailbroken. The unlock is an even simpler stage: you need to add a new source under Cydia so that you have access to ultrasn0w, maybe try the url http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and see what happens…
So here’s the official recommendation by the hacker we spoke to:
DO NOT upgrade to version 3.1
- Jailbreak your new iPhone 3GS by downloading purplera1n here: http://purplera1n.com/
- Follow the instructions to install Cydia- you’re jailbroken now!
- To unlock, start by adding a new source under Cydia so that you can access ultrasn0w, and using this url: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
