“Badass Hair” Products Make for Badass Story, Hair

Written by Danielle

As displayed in my bio photo, I rock short hair. Super dense – and sometimes unmanageable – short hair. And since my decision to chop it all off three years ago, I’ve quadrupled the size of my hair product collection. But even though I’ve had this passion to style and funk up my hair in fun, daring ways, it was beginning to seem as though the perfect “stuff” for my hair was still hiding in some over-priced salon that my wallet would surely discriminate against.

And then I was introduced to Badass Hair products. Sure, the name may seem over the top, and may have you wondering  ‘Hmm, is a brand that actually boasts the word ‘Badass’ in its name likely to actually aide in achieving badass hair?”

It is.

Let me back up a second and just give you a rundown of the history of  “Badass Hair,” because along with its name, the story is pretty dang cool.

Scott Fontana, the line’s founder and hairstylist of 24 years, hails from a family comprised of hairstylists – his dad, mother, and brothers all chopped locks for a living. Upon “getting into a little bit of trouble in high school, if you know what I mean,” Fontana says his father asked him if he wanted to drop out of high school and go to beauty school. He said yes. And at 16 years-old, Fontana found himself among throngs of girls in beauty school heaven. “I was like a kid in a candy store,” he laughed. I bet. So goes the beginning of legendary career, which has included over two decades of styling nationwide, 15 years of owning his own salons, and in September 2008, the creation of his own product line.

I was lucky enough to experience three products in particular, and upon receiving them, I was thrilled to see what they each had to offer in the way of badassery.

First things first: “Affect,” Extreme Styling Paste

While I’m usually not a fan of running a palm-full of sticky goop through my hair, the texture of this paste wasn’t too much for me to handle. Following my twice-weekly shampooing, I towel dried my hair, the styled it with this, and to my surprise, my hair kept it’s shape throughout most of the day without looking as though I had dirty wizard hair. Yay!

Next up was the Spray-In Conditioner, a product that I wasn’t sure was particularly useful to me, but I imagine would have been more so had I tried this as my long-haired self. It’s purpose is to “detangle, strengthen, and smooth” your hair, and it can also be used a refresher between shampooing days because it’s so light-weight. Benefits include an increase in hair’s flexibility and added shine, and it’s botanical ingredients include aloe and green tea extract, which promote hair growth. So while I didn’t need this for it’s detangling help, it’s still something great to have on hand for it’s hair health benefits!

And last but not least is the “Light It Up” Shine Spray, something that I was more wary of than any other product because 1) I wash my hair twice weekly, which makes for occasional third day nastiness when there’s a lot of product in it, and 2) every “shine spray” I’ve ever encountered has added more than enough shine than necessary for any one person.

Again, to my surprise, the spray worked wonders without giving off the “I shampoo my hair with bacon grease” look. In fact, this was the most impressive of the bunch. My first time using it was actually on a commercial set for a spec that I was an extra in. I’m not an actress, I have occasional fright of being filmed, and I had no idea how to ensure that my makeup and hair would be on point. After all, this was my film debut! Ahh! So I spritzed a tad bit of this on my hair, and voila! It actually made my hair look fantastic. Really. And I’m pretty sure my hair also looked fab on camera as a result! Other pluses to this product is that it’s alcohol-free, protects your hair from UV rays, and includes botanical ingredients such as Birch Bark Extract, Jojoba Seed Oil, and Safflower Seed Oil. And it sort of smells like bubblegum!

On the whole, I was pretty impressed with “Badass Hair.” As a hair product cynic, it’s a big deal that I’m thrilled to have this line incorporated into my daily hair routine – I can’t wait to try their “I Hate Frizz” frizz eliminator and their “Luminosity” flat-iron spray. And at a sweet price-point, how could I resist stocking up?
