Devendra Banhart’s newest Indie-Folk album entitled Mala is an understandable and honest account of love. Don’t get me wrong, with a past of someone who wrote songs entitled “Shabop Shalom” “Chinese Children” “Chin Chin Muck Muck” “This Beard is for Siobhan” and of course “Tit Smoking” there is always an induced humor and sense of whimsy in his music. This album is not too drastic in genre, staying sufficiently close to the themes and sounds of his previous album What Will We Be which came out in 2009.
My favorite song from the album is “Never Seen Such Good Things” for its melodious tune and honest lyrics. The track “Golden Girls”is also fantastic and is more rock and experimental with heavy guitar and bass.
It’s definitely worth a listen and I highly recommend checking out.
