Flashing Lights (and hoo-has)

Written by Marisa

I like art. It’s good to get your ass cultured every once and a while. But add “grand opening” and “copious cocktails” to the mix and it’s more like boom boom than boo-ring. Jason Pritzker and Alex Zamiar hosted the “Young Modern” grand opening gala for the bomb new Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago. It brought in the sexiest Chicago socialites and hipster art lovin’ fiends alike. The event was all about hotness and eye candy. Art was all around and not just on the walls-— models in avante garde runway fashion from designers Marisa Swystun and Michelle Barone mingled stoically throughout the 2 wings. The main entrance of the new Modern Wing (which is also a rentable space for events) is a piece of art in itself. Bright and sleek, its style is something Warhol would be proud of. Take the glass staircase and you’ll end up in the new contemporary collection with recent additions from Mel Bochner, Christopher Wool and of course “Factory Girl’s” BFF, Warhol, to name a few.

After mingling for a hot minute in the Modern Wing, I left in search of a P.A.R.T.why? Because I gots to.

Who would have thought that to get to the other side of the event that one had to walk over a creepy guy in a glass casket? It probably would’ve been a good night to wear boy shorts under my dress. Glass casket dude got a nice show, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only hoo-ha he saw that night. The second I strutted into the other wing where the party was boomin’, I knew this was my sh*t! Multicolored flash-flash lights-lights Kanye would be jeals of, corridor after corridor of bars plus a ridic champagne bar, swanky furniture to look skanky on and hot beats vibrating throughout.

Designed by famed Italian architect, Renzo Piano, the Modern Wing is the new casa for the museum’s collection of 20th- and 21st-century art. The addition of the wing increases the size of the museum by more than a third and adds a crazy amount of light to its world-renowned collections, with a window to the city’s skyline and the famed “Bean” in Millennium Park. Check out the new Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago located at 111 S. Michigan Ave 60603 #312.443.3600, M-W 10:30am-5:00pm, TH-FRI 10:30am-9:00pm, SAT-SUN 10:00am-5:00pm.

**Hook a recessionista up! There are FREE summer evenings Thursdays and Fridays from 5-9pm. Admission is normally $18 for adults and Chicago residents receive $2 off with proof of residency.
