First, DO NOT put things together based on color. Color alone is not enough to determine if garments or accessories match. When experimenting with a new trend or a new style, remember that a full look should tell a story. A whimsical hippie-inspired sheer top looks great with fringed boots. But a crisp, tailored sheer top will look odd when paired with those same boots.
Lesson number two: don’t buy something just because it’s in style. Trends come and go MUCH more quickly than they used to. Certain cuts and styles look better on specific body types. If you’re curvy, don’t rock homeless-chic (over-sized, baggy layers). If you’re slender, give yourself some curves with added volume and flounces. ALWAYS stick with what is flattering on your body… then worry about what’s in style.
Try incorporating color in unexpected ways. A bright top always looks great and attracts positive attention, but everyone owns at least one pretty, colored blouse. Colorful jewelry, handbags, and shoes, when paired with a neutral ensemble, can turn any outfit from drab to fab. Remember: choose colors that compliment your skin tone! If you look sick when you hold the colored item next to your face, put it down and leave the store.
Above all, be confident in what you wear. Regardless of whether it’s right or wrong, if you rock it like you mean it, no one will be able to tell that you really don’t know what the hell you’re doing.
