Style Spotting: Ok, I’m Over Neon

Written by emilyc

Poor neon. It had such a huge moment, and now it’s burnt out. I even wrote several devotional blog posts to neon. It reflected the intense rise and fall of excitement surrounding the approach of spring. Ok, the weather is hot now; it’s not as exciting, and we need some pastels to cool us down as summer heat creeps in.

While neon is blinding and offensive, pastels are pleasing to the eye and can be oh so chic (neon – albeit popular – could never quite be accurately described as “chic”. Maybe “fun”?) Take note of my roommate and I (pictured above) having a serious mint pant moment. We may or may not have planned to wear matching navy sweaters to offset the Easter tone of our pants. Another way to de-Easter a pastel is to pair it with a beige, khaki, or denim.

Be careful not to channel any Amish prairie maid, nursing home, or pregnancy hospital gown vibes with your color palette. With one look in the mirror, you’ll know if you’re working your pastels correctly or not – and if you don’t know, your gay friend will promptly bring it to your attention.

With a major in international business and years of being surrounded by ill-fitting suits and all the wrong shoes, she learned that the importance of fashion needs to be communicated to the world. To her, fashion is on the same level as charity work and feeding hungry children. Emily can be found frolicking the streets of her gayborhood enjoying the off-color humor of the gays.
