I don’t excercise. If God had wanted me to bend over, he would have put diamonds on the floor. -Joan Rivers
1. My Friends Are Fantastically Bizarre… Just Like Me. A good friend of mine (we’ll call her “Jamie” for now) is an absolutely gorgeous 30 year old single mom, doctor, and woman with an incredibly lanky body that most humans would kill for. She’s perfect, basically. We don’t get to see each other as often as I think we’d like, especially because our kids love playing together, but we try to keep in touch via emails/texts/facebook as often as possible. I got this emailĀ from her on Friday afternoon, and it totally reminded me why I’m friends with her in the first place- she’s awesome at life.
2. I Mean, She Should Try It… Right? People love trying things at least once just so they can check things off their bucket list. Sky diving? Check. Eating street meat in a random South American country without dying? Check. Wearing leather pants? Check. Dating a transgendered college student? CHECK.
3. GOD. I had a long drive with out to the Hamptons this past week with someone that I love very much. On the way back, the normal 2 hour drive got stretched into about 3 hours because of traffic and the impending doom of riding on mere fumes in the gas tank (whoops, too lazy to get gas on the way out there). When you’re stuck in a car for 3 hours with someone you care about, it goes without saying that some pretty philosophical conversations end up dominating the ride. At some point I asked my driving partner if he believed in God… he matter of factly said “no, why would I?” His beliefs are based solely in science and what he can see before him via hard evidence, lab studies, and perhaps even medical journals. He looked at me assuming I would nod my head in agreement, but I think he was ultimately disappointed when I responded, “well, I’m not sure what to label it… but I’m definitely spiritual in some way.” He was bewildered. I think he might’ve even been disappointed in me. The truth is, every single culture for the past several thousand years has found some sense of spirituality. Whether it’s 34 gods, Totem poles, Voodoo, or one ever-present God, it’s just part of the human experience. We’re hard-wired to look for more, seek out answers, and find comfort in our happiest and darkest moments with some sense of something greater. I think it’s as unnatural as giving up water, air, food, or love to deny yourself of the ability to connect to something greater- even if that’s on the most minimal level. We all need something to keep our families together, cling to when we’re sick, and remind us to be good, righteous people.
