Only For the Lonely: The Museum of Broken Relationships

Every time I go through a breakup, one of the first things I do is box up all the things that remind me of whatever poor guy I just dumped, and put them in a box where I don’t have to see them. Being heartbroken is bad enough, but having constant reminders around you of your lost love is much worse. Croatian artists Olinka Visitina and Drazen Grubisic realized this, and created a museum to showcase these items as a celebration of their failed relationship.

Located in Zagreb, Croatia, the Museum of Broken Relationships receives donations of random symbolic items from all over the world, and puts them on display. The exhibits range from regular things like teddy bears and photographs to more bizarre items like an axe and a prosthetic leg (from some man who went through a breakup with a nurse).

If you are experiencing some heartbreak, you might consider donating some of your lousy ex-boyfriend’s things, either as payback for him cheating on you with Rachel (the bitchy girl at your office that wears nylons to cover the bruises on her knees) or as a form of catharsis for yourself.

I know a lot of people disagree with me on this, but I would never want to throw anything related to my relationships out, no matter how bad the breakup was. If someone is important enough to gain an invite into my heart, then whatever time I spend with them is worth it, regardless of the outcome. To me, displaying these lost symbols of love somewhere is a nice way to commemorate time well spent, lessons learned, and pregnancies avoided.
