Romancing Your Man (on any budget)

Our best VD picks for men…

If there’s a man in your life, you’re going to need an appropriate Valentine’s Day gift for him pretty soon. The key is that you can’t go overboard with men- roses and weekends away are simply too much. In my personal opinion, the magic formula is to do 1/3 as much as you expect him to do. If you expect him to take you to a beautiful meal at your favorite restaurant, send you roses, and surprise you with a cute pendant, you should reciprocate by buying him a $100 iHome dock. I realize this sounds sexist, but there’s good logic behind it. Men can’t feel matched or one-upped. Here are some of my favorite picks for the holiday:

Tshirts Always Win. Whether he’s your casual friend, boyfriend, husband, or even gay bestie- every man loves a t-shirt. Especially a cool one. Spenglish makes witty, creative shirts with top-of-the-line pima cottons, like this one that simple says “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.” Soccer rules, and men appreciate that.

Chocolate. If you’ve just started seeing someone, a small bag of chocolates might be best. These little Wonka delights are seriously delish and will remind your dude that you’re still a little playful at heart! Plus, if it doesn’t work out, you can just eat them (happily). By the way, I plan on getting these for every male I care about. They’re super tasty and inexpensive… why not?

Audio Equipment. I have yet to meet a man that has no interest in audio equipment. I also have yet to meet a man that remembers to do things when you ask. Whether young, old, gay, straight, hairy, or clean-shaved, your man needs an iHome alarm clock. Why? Because he needs to be able to blast his music in the morning as he ties his tie, and you need to know that he’ll show up to your double dates on time. Under $100, joy!

Motorcycle Stuff. Yes, this lamp is really made from recycled motorcycle parts. That means it’s perfect for the manliest of men- the ones that like things just because they have motors. If your man lives alone, he probably has crummy furnishings in his home (even if he makes boatloads of cash), and if you two are living together he’ll probably still want this awesome lamp for his office or den. It’s a wise investment because he’ll think you really care about his hobbies.

  • Hi Bryce,

I was turned on to the site from a repeat episode of the Millionaire Matchmaker. Knowing full well that the show had to cast you in the worst possible light in the interest of good television, I wanted to check out your site to see what you and the site itself was really all about.

I am 38 y/o and straight as an arrow, so why would I have any interest in this site?? I have come to love your posts! I became sold after your Valentine’s Day suggestions, and had to laugh at “if your guy lives alone, he probably has crummy furnishings, even if he makes boatloads of cash.” I do pretty well for myself but yes, I live alone and there are multiple cracked/broken chairs surrounding the dining room table. We just don’t care about that stuff, you’re so right!!

I have found that reading your posts are actually great for guys like me, as it gives me insight to how a typical woman thinks and what she’d expect out of me. Keep up the great work!
