CELEBS

She pictured herself painting by the gallon in a loft in New York City (Corno interview coming up!)

In the two weeks that followed Art Baselista, I found myself spending countless hours intellectualizing the artists’s nature vs. the image, and debating the new meanings of pop in contemporary art and the laws of commerce. Close to a full year passed since my idyllic trip with Corno to Hong Kong, and the world has changed.

This past Tuesday, Opera Gallery New York put together a successful vernissage to show a new selection of Corno’s work, all from 2008. In the midst of recession, her stocks have been showing a stable, high growth in all markets.

David Chines co-hosted a joyful evening of shmoozing and boozing and a bunch of gorgeous people showed up to preview the artist’s newest Faces, plus two new female Nudes. The party, held in Corno’s immaculate loft-apartment on West Broadway, was sponsored by Glitterati Magazine and Inocente ultra premium tequila, and featured on Guest of a Guest.

The audacious explorations on light and color and the life breathing out of the characters portrayed in Corno’s new pieces caught me silent once again. How can paintings be so different from a period to another, if the chick’s playing (i.e. bossing) in the studio around the same theme: the human body & what’s in its heart?

What makes the difference with her is an intouchable, rock-solid devotion to her vision. She pictured herself painting by the gallon in a loft in New York City (interview coming up!). Dubbed new expressionist and superlative colorist, she was extremely successful, very early in her career in Canada. Always ahead of her time, Corno set up her studio on Bond Street twenty years before Ian Schrager bought the block.

Women who choose to be artists sure go through their load of joys and struggles, especially when they find inspiration in the busy streets of Manhattan. Corno’s the one person who taught me the dichotomy between emotions and creativity, and for that among many other things, I will one day buy her a piece.

See it by yourself on 115 Spring Street, it’s up until December 31 – a perfect thing to do if you are walking around Soho with friends and family during the holidays (if this snow can melt lol!)
