T-Mobile, irresponsible, has decided that while they alone possess the information needed to capture a rapist, they’re gonna like, protect him from prosecution instead.
According to T-Mobile, the privacy of their customers is more important to them than taking a rapist off of the street, despite a court subpoena asking they cooperate with the police.
The victim, who was attacked in July, woke up in a car to find two unknown men on top of her. Later, the victim’s partner received a phone call from a blocked number. The voice on the other end of the line took credit for the crime, even apologizing for it before hanging up.
And that’s what the rapist will remain–just a voice–unless T-Mobile does the right fucking thing and puts a sex offender behind bars. Really? Pretty sure rape is the ultimate betrayal of privacy. The offender can use a T-Mobile line to further taunt and traumatize someone post-assault, but the victim can’t have peace of mind that everything was done to punish the person who took advantage of her in the worst way possible? T-Mobile is going to enable the person responsible for this crime because they’re afraid of violating a criminal’s first amendment right?
Change.org has an ongoing petition you can sign to urge T-Mobile to release the phone number to the police. Read more about the case here.
